The Christian takes his place, as it were, with Christ upon the Cross, and there has his old self crucified. The ‘body’ of Christ here meant is the ‘crucified body’; the Christian shares in that crucifixion, and so gets rid of his sinful past.3 Cranfield correctly summarizes Paul’s meaning: Christians “are free from the law’s condemnation.”4 In using the analogy of marriage, Paul does not set aside nor thereby comment on Biblical laws and references relative to marriage, i.e., Gen. 1:27; 2:21–24;
